It Matters Monday

APRIL 4, 2011

I have been just a tad bit frustrated with the world we live in. Not all of it is awful; there is a lot about it that’s magnificent! However, I’m exposed to troubling things on a daily basis through school, other people and all sorts of media outlets. What does not sit well with me is people’s ability to take advantage of, and hurt other human beings, especially those who are vulnerable. By, does not sit well with me, I mean it down right angers me!

I always feel silly when I consider changing the world; it’s so big and I’m only one person. What impact could I possibly have, I mean really? If you’ve read any of my previous posts you’ll know that I don’t have a rigid road map for my life but I do know that I want to make a difference! Somehow I want to make this world just a little bit better.

SO, I’ve had enough! I’ve had enough of not doing anything about it; I’ve had enough of feeling discouraged because “what difference is it going to make”; I’ve had enough of just THINKING that the world should change.

I WANT to believe that human beings are fundamentally good, that they care not only about themselves but each other; in order to truly believe that I need proof. Gandhi famously said “be the change you want to see in the world” so I propose – It Matters Monday.

Monday’s have a bad rap as it is; not very many people like them, myself included. So I suggest that we make Mondays a little better. I don’t’ know about you but doing good things, making people smile and somehow having an impact always brightens up my day, even if it is a Monday. Every week, I’ll write about my experiences and I encourage you to join me. They don’t have to be super grand gestures of charity. I mean, if that’s what you are doing that’s amazing, by all means share, I would love to hear about it.

However, if you made the world better in the smallest way I also want to know about it, because it matters. From learning something that changed your perspective and made you a better person, to making someone’s day better, whether they’re a stranger or a friend. Conversely, if you’re on the receiving end of something awesome write about it. I truly believe that those who take the time to care and make our lives happier deserve to be recognized for it.

In the words of John F. Kennedy “one person can make a difference, and everyone should try.”

If you want to participate: copy and paste the image, (I'm working on making a button) mention It Matters Monday on your blog and add your link to the bottom of the post, if you're not a blogger leave your good deed in the comments section. I look forward to hearing from all of you.

  1. I am with you here. Change always begins with me. And you. Now we have a sub-culture.

  2. This is such a wonderful quote! and i think your dilemma is one a lot of people struggle with, its hard to stay motivated to help when it sometimes feels like it doesn't make an impact.

  3. That's a great idea for a weekly post. I think I get too focused on the things people do that piss me off than the things people do to help or encourage me. Just today I had a friend at work spend a half hour with me printing and cutting my designs so I could have them ready to mount for my class tonight. I'm sure she didn't think anything of it, but without her help my presentation wouldn't have been as appealing.

  4. Again, another good one. It's quite depressing really. There is so much gloom out there. People rarely smile.
I think it was Ghandi that said 'Be the change you want to see..', so that's what I try to do. I'll keep you posted.

Now, not sure how if I followed the instructions correctly. If my image is in the wrong place, do take it off!

  6. Thanks for your comments everyone!

@GlobeTrotter: I see what you mean, no worries I'll do my best to take it off. It took me about a week to figure out how to get the link up. Technology, not exactly my strong suit. I will remove it though, as soon as I figure out how :)

  8. i started a page for people to donate to give clean drinking water to other countries:

    http://mycharitywater.org/ashleysbirthdaywish

feel free to donate! or better yet create your own page....whatever!

It was just a start of me wanting to do something good for a change, and I'll progress to bigger things. Even if its something simple like this or just giving a random act of kindness to a stranger, it all makes a difference...
